- Learn To Sail a Tall Ship with STV PLayfair. -

Take the helm and hoist the sails aboard Playfair. The vessel is one of three youth sailing vessels offering tall ship adventures to the public from June 28. Playfair docked in Harbour Square Park.

Playfair was designed and built as a sail-training vessel (STV) by Francis A. McLachlan, the naval architect behind St.Lawrence II. The brigantine was launched in Kingston, Ontario in 1973 during a Royal visit. Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip attended her naming ceremony and Playfair became the first Canadian tall ship to be christened by a reigning monarch.

Playfair is operated by Toronto Brigantine, a Toronto charity committed to helping young people gain confidence and leadership skills through sailing. Modeled after St.Lawrence II’s renowned sail-training program, The Toronto Brigantine offers 4-14 day courses for youth ages 13-18. In addition to sailing, students also learn about environmentally sustainable practices and gain an appreciation for the rich marine heritage of the Great Lakes.
