2019 IDS: Cabin Concept House

The Backcountry Hut Company will provide this year's design concept house feature, Great Lakes Cabin, with landscape design by Flattery Design. In line with IDS19's "Power of Design" theme, this full-scale concept house enables visitors to enter and experience a new "kit-of-parts" approach to the creation of small-scale structures. The design concept presents a modernist interpretation of the notion of rustic wilderness living based on the spirit of Canadian outdoor culture.

The Backcountry Hut Company was conceived to assist individuals and organizations in the design, planning and construction of small-scale outdoor structures. The Great Lakes Cabin – designed by Leckie Studio – is the latest edition of The Backcountry Hut Company product offering. The system provides a premium quality shelter suitable for remote locations, with capabilities to withstand the harshest weather conditions.

The compact structure is crafted to have a minimal environmental impact on the site. Every bit of its tiny 670 square feet floorplan is utilized, featuring a lofted sleeping area, a bathroom, and a covered exterior deck. The structural system is comprised of a sustainably harvested engineered timber frame, clad with prefabricated insulated wall/roof/floor panels. The envelope system can be customized to meet Net Zero and Passive House standards.

The landscape design was created to be something simple, but significant. Using an array of materials: steel, granite, concrete and wood, some key features have been created. A funky sitting area off of the hut extends the living space into the outdoors. The sitting area also includes a wood burning fire pit for added warmth and companionship. A viewing point sits off to the side of the sitting area, creating a secondary space to take everything in. A "lake" feature, tall birches and undulating surfaces of greenery surround the cabin. Custom pieces were created in the different features of the display. A great lakes theme with a modern twist.
