πποΈπ³π² City of Toronto receives Tree City of the World designation
Monday, 22 April 2024 08:00.AM
Today on Earth Day, the City of Toronto has once again been named a Tree City of the World for the fifth consecutive year.
This designation, awarded in partnership by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, recognizes the Cityβs commitment to ensuring sustainable and healthy urban forests, protecting local ecosystems and enhancing its resilience to climate change.
The City plants approximately 120,000 trees each year while managing and maintaining the urban forest that makes up the 11.5 million trees found across the city. These efforts are to help the City achieve its 40 per cent tree canopy cover target by 2050. As well, the City engages the public through tours, talks and hands-on planting and stewardship events to increase knowledge and appreciation of Torontoβs urban forest and natural environment.
With only 200 cities around the world being recognized in 2023 as a tree city of the world, Toronto is one of the only 18 cities recognized in Canada.
